About To Boldly Fold

To Boldly Fold was born out of a curiosity about the creation of books. From the making of the paper to the way people connect with books, all elements intrigued me.

As an artist, I recognized the importance of the sketchbook or journal in the creative process. I wanted to produce books of a quality that I simply could not find in stores. After testing a variety of papers, I found a few different weights and finishes that could withstand the persistent hand of an artist or writer. The pages are hand torn from the very same large sheets that artists trust day by day. The pages are bound to genuine leather covers using only Irish linen thread.

I take into consideration the look, feel, and experience of each piece that I create. Craftsmanship is of the utmost importance to me, informing every step of the process. I find enjoyment in knowing that my work is a vessel in which other artists are inspired to create.

About Melissa Chao

I am the artist behind To Boldly Fold. For my entire life, I have loved making things and finding out how things are created. For as long as I can remember, I have been drawing and painting. I decided to pursue photography in college, but after studying abroad in Cortona, Italy, I found that my real passion is in bookbinding.

After graduating from the Maryland Institute College of Art in 2009, I decided to start To Boldly Fold as a way to pass on my excitement towards creativity to others. I believe that creativity is an extremely important part of the learning process. In recent years, the removal of art programs from schools has really hit home. I couldn't imagine a day in school without an art class, and it saddens me to think that kids aren't even given the opportunity. I see To Boldly Fold as doing my part to contribute to a more creative culture.

I'd like to thank my sponsors for their contribution through the kickstarter program.
